Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa, was today decorated as a Deputy Commissioner of police.
The 52-year-old was decorated by her new boss, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba.
Ajunwa made history as the first Nigerian to win gold at the Olympics, when she achieved the feat in the long jump event at the 1996 Atlanta games in the United States.
She made a jump length of 7.12 meters (on her first attempt) during the final to pick the gold medal.
Her feat in Atlanta made her the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event.
She originally played football and was a member of the Super Falcons squad that featured at the maiden FIFA women’s Women’s World Cup in China in 1991.
