Varsity students on rampage as soldiers assault campus security

There was apprehension at the Abubakar Tafawa -Balewa University (ATBU) campus gate last night when some unidentified soldiers on mufti clashed with security personnel at the Yelwa campus of the institution.

The incident was said to have occurred around 11 pm when the soldiers, said to be six in a convoy of two vehicles, were prevented from gaining entrance into the school gate because their vehicles had tinted glasses, reports The Nation.

The delay infuriated the military men who forced their way through the campus gate.

It was gathered that chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) Bauchi branch, Dr Ibrahim Inuwa, was allegedly assaulted in the fracas.

Though their mission to the school campus at the wee hours of the night was yet to be ascertained as of press time, some students confided they came to visit their girlfriends.

Students reportedly blocked the two major gates leading to the campus in retaliation, preventing the soldiers from leaving the school premises while they pelted their vehicles with stones and other objects.

When our correspondent visited the scene today, it was observed all the windscreens and the glasses of the two cars, Toyota Camry and Corolla, including the lights and the tires were destroyed.

Narrating what transpired, Inuwa said: ” I was passing by when I saw the soldiers in a heated exchange of words with the campus security personnel and I had to intervene.

“I told the soldiers to calm down but to my dismay, they left the security men to face me and even had to slap me three times. And you know it’s against the rules of the University to come in with tinted glasses and that was why their vehicles were stopped at the gate.

“The scene attracted students who went on a rampage. We had to prevail on them to calm down. Before we could say anything, the two cars of the soldiers were destroyed.

It took the intervention of the Brigadier General who begged for their release. He came with the military police and they were arrested immediately.

“They lied that they came to the school to print some documents from the school of Armour. It was later discovered they even left the barracks without a pass.”
