A traditional ruler in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been reportedly shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional ruler in the community.

The incident reportedly occurred yesterday while traditional rulers and other members of the community were performing funeral rites for their late colleague, reports The PUNCH.

A source in the community said a firearm was discharged during the ceremony, with the bullet reportedly hitting Akinola in the head.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death.”

The incident reportedly threw the community into confusion, while the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm remained unclear.

When contacted, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident, saying one suspect had been arrested in connection with the death.

Jimoh said an investigation had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” the PPRO said.
