LG election: ADC threatens to drag Southeast governors to court

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 19, 2024 1851 Minutes read0

Following the inability of the Southeast governors to conduct Local Government elections in their respective States, the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) has threatened a legal action against them if the situation remains the same in the next 60 days.

National Vice Chairman of the party, Southeast Zone, Chilos Godsent disclosed this in a communique he released to newsmen after the 2024 annual zonal retreat of the party held at Awka, Anambra State.

ADC also requested the governors to “reconstitute fund and mandate the respective State Independent Electoral Commission to publish the timetable for Local Government Council Election in their respective states.”

Godsent argued that the non-existence of Democratic Local Government system violates Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Also, the party identified high unemployment rate among the youths in the zone as a major factor responsible for crime .

He said “high level of youth unemployment in the South East region has assumed a dangerous dimension and threat to peace, stability in the region.

“The meeting asserted that youth unemployment is a major driver of crimes, cultism, drug abuse and addiction including the ravaging insecurity in the region.

“A democratic Local Government System in each of the states has the capacity to provide meaningful employment for at least ten thousand (10,000) youths per state who are likely to occupy the position of Local Government Chairmen and their deputies, Councilors, Supervisory councilors.

“Personal Assistants, Special Assistants, including many youths who are going to be contractors to the Local Government Council etc. More so, a Democratic Local Government System will help promote Community Development,” Godsent stated.
