Expunge governors’ assent to land titles in Land Use Act – Expert

The FrontierThe FrontierNovember 8, 2023 4451 Minutes read0

•Nigerian Senate

As the public continues to frown at the enormous powers granted state Governors in matters relating to land, an appeal has gone to the National Assembly to as a matter of urgency; reconsider expunging the power given to state governors in assenting to title deeds before they become legal documents.

Mr.Adedayo Adedoyin, a chartered land expert, disclosed this, in an interview, reports Daily Independent.

According to him, the ‘enormous’ powers given to state Governors in the land use act, has over the years, been abused by ‘ most if not all the Governors to witch hunt perceived political opponents.

His words: “The power ascribed to the state Governors on matters affecting land titles has turned most of these Governors into mini gods and the earlier this power is whittled down or completely expunged from the act, perceived political opponents would continue to be at the mercy of these Governors. It is about time, something was done to tinker with this provision in the act.

He said this power if reduced, would allow for a robust dispensation of application title deeds on land in the states.

He said that with the 10th National Assembly fully on ground the issue of the Land Use Act should be brought into the limelight for the Lawmakers to deliberate on ways of curtailing the excessive powers granted to state governors.
