Edo guber: Labour Party committee chairman condemns attack on Akpata’s campaign team

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 12, 2024 2502 Minutes read0

•Kingsley Okundaye

Labour Party’s (LP) National Transition Committee of Mobilisation and Recruitment Chairman, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, has condemned the alleged attack on Barr. Olumide Akpata’s Campaign Team in Owan West Local Government Area in Edo State,

It would be recalled that the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barr. Akpata is the Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party for the September 21, 2024 election in Edo, reports Nigerian Tribune.

Okundaye who is also the National Coordinator of Patriotic Members Congress of the LP gave the condemnation in a press statement made available to journalists in Benin, the state Capital.

He expressed disappointment that in this modern age and time, people could still resort to what he described as a backward way of trying to prevent the Labour Party candidate from carrying out his constitutional responsibility.

The Edo born politician described the attack on Akpata as barbaric and undemocratic, adding that the people who orchestrated the attack do not mean well for democracy, hence, they should be brought to book.

The Labour Party stalwart enjoined members of the party to carry out their campaign in a civilised manner and shun campaign of calumny.

Okundaye, however, called on the state government to give all the parties in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo level playing ground during the cause of campaign.

The alleged attack on Edo State Labour Party guber candidate, Barr. Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata team in Owan West has continued to generate condemnations from different political stakeholders in the state.

In another development, the Labour Party Chieftain, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, has sympathised with relations of victims of the recent Jattu Market rainfall disaster in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area in Edo, particularly those who lost their loved ones and wounded.

Recall that four persons were killed at the popular Jattu Market on Monday, July 8, 2024, following heavy trees that fell on them during the early morning downpour.

This is even as scores of others were seriously injured by the incident, which according to eyewitnesses account, caused tension and sorrow in the locality.

But reacting to the unfortunate development, Dr. Okundaye, said the government would have long ago carried out precautionary measures in order to avoid such a tragedy, just like the way it’s done in developed countries.

He said that one of the labour party’s policies that would be implemented when it wins the governorship election in September is the issues of welfare and safety of the people, which according to him is a priority to the Akpata.
