Lawyer drags Governor Aiyedatiwa to court over postponed LG elections

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 30, 2024 2091 Minutes read0

•Governor Aiyedatiwa

Human rights lawyer, Tope Temokun, has instituted a suit before an the Ondo State High Court to compel the state Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) to conduct elections into the Local Government Areas in the state.

Defendants in the suit are ODIEC, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Attorney-General of the state, reports The Nation.

In the suit, Temokun asked the court to determine whether ODIEC’s act of indefinite postponement of the local elections did not violate the 1999 Constitution and the Local Government Administration, Conduct of Local Government Election, and Allied Matters Law.

Temokun also asked the court to determine whether Governor Aiyedatiwa’s act of appointing any committee, be it caretaker or transition committee other than democratically elected officials, to govern the affairs of the Local Government Areas in Ondo State was not illegal and unconstitutional.

He is asking for that the defendants were under an immediate obligation to put in place democratically elected local government councils, to govern or administer or oversee the affairs of the Local Government Areas in Ondo State, for the purpose of enforcing and giving effect to the orders of the Supreme Court.

Temokun is seeking an order of the court to nullify appointed members of any committee, be it caretaker or transition committee, by Governor Aiyedatiwa.
