Hunger protest: UNILAG postpones ongoing second semester examination

The University of Lagos has recently announced the postponement of the ongoing examination, earlier slated for tomorrow and Friday, due to the planned protest.

In a circular released by the school today and signed by the Head Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the school noted that the management, due to the planned protest from August 1 to August 10, 2024, decided to postpone the exams to take preventive measures for the university’s staff and students.

Ibraheem said the university also advises the university community to be security conscious.

The statement reads, “In view of reports of the planned protest scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2024, members of the University Community are hereby advised to remain calm, safe, and security conscious at all locations.

“Management has put in place precautionary measures to ensure your safety, security, and well-being on the three campuses of our University, especially due to the ongoing 2nd Semester, 2023/2024 examinations.

“Please note that all examinations scheduled to hold on Thursday, August 1 and Friday, August 2, 2024 are postponed till further notice.”

She further stated that a new date would be scheduled for the papers initially slated for the two days.

Recall that recently, a group, the Take It Back movement, called for a nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance in the country.

The group tagged the protest “Days of Rage,” which it said would be held nationwide from August 1 to 10.

Likewise, the National Association of Nigerian Students had pledged not to get involved in the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 over hardship in the country.

The NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, in a meeting with Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said, “Though we have challenges but we want to say that we have resolved to be law abiding and not to join any chaos in the society,” he said.

The National Universities Commission also on Monday said the education ministry had directed vice-chancellors nationwide to address their campus communities on safety while recommending that students remain on campus and focus on their academic pursuits to avoid exposure to any potential danger.
