Insecurity: Allow Nigerians to protect themselves, govt has failed – Northern youths tell FG

The FrontierThe FrontierSeptember 6, 2024 1891 Minutes read0

•Comrade Isah Abubakar

Amidst rising insecurity, Northern youths have advocated for self-protection by Nigerians since the government has failed in its responsibility to protect the citizens.

This was contained in a press statement today signed by Comrade Isah Abubakar, National President of Northern Youth Council of Nigeria.

Abubakar noted that it’s disheartening, at the rate of mass killings in recent times in Northern Nigeria, reports Daily Independent.

According to him, from all indications, the citizens have no choice but to stay with this reality, saying that even though the two ministers of defence are from the North West region, there hasn’t been any significant improvement on security in that region.

He said, “In my opinion, people should be allowed to protect themselves because it appears the government has failed in that area of providing security of lives and property, which is the absolute responsibility of the government.

“It’s clear that the bandits operating in the north have overpowered the security operatives in the region, only the people can defend themselves.

“The Katsina State governor has called on the people to defend themselves in recent times. We advise individuals to get armed and protect their communities and farms.

“It’s difficult to cope with the current hike in the price of PMS. It has worsened the agony and state of abject poverty in the country. It’s making life almost impossible.

Abubakar added, “Unless the present government addresses this, it’s capable of causing a national scene. I wonder why people compare us with countries that pay wages for $16 to $18 per hour. The government must understand that Nigeria is a third world country, moving taxation at the speed of other advanced countries won’t help us as the poverty capital of the world.

“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has no business with how our country should be run, but our leaders keep listening to IMF and implementing its anti-people policy against Nigerians.

“We appeal to the government to apply wisdom and fear of God in governance, as the next wave of protest against bad governance is building up.

“The president should think twice about taking some critical decisions that affect the well-being of Nigerians negatively, as we’re sure that some groups of people in this government are already working against him to lose the 2027 presidential election, by the kind of policies they encourage him to implement.”
