Amidst economic crisis, Governor donates SUVs to traditional rulers

Governor Nasiru Idris yesterday donated four new Toyota Land Cruisers to emirs in the four emirates of Kebbi State.

The official vehicles were presented to the emirs of Yauri, Argungu, Zuru and Gwandu at the government house in Birnin Kebbi, reports Daily Trust.

He said it became necessary for his administration to give the new jeeps to the emirs because their official vehicles were old.

He assured that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of the emirs as custodians of Islamic culture and tradition.

The donation came at a time citizens face cost of living crisis and hardship that trails the removal of fuel subsidy.

This is not the first time the governor of Kebbi State will distribute SUVs.

In March this year, Governor Idris distributed SUVs to members of the State House of Assembly.

Idris, who announced this in a social media post, said his gesture should be seen as “a symbol of our commitment to serving the people of Kebbi State diligently”.

The governor, who assumed office last year, then said “The government has given new vehicles to members of the House of Assembly, Commissioners, Security Services, and Chairmen of Boards, Departments and Agencies for optimal operation,” he said.

Many other state governments and the federal government have taken similar actions amidst the economic crisis as elected officials continue to use public funds to purchase luxury items for themselves and others they try to court.

There have been various reports on how the Tinubu administration allowed lawmakers to purchase new vehicles for themselves last year while the government was appealing to citizens to bear the brunt of the economic crises caused by government policies.

The administration has also faced criticisms for spending N21 billion on a new residence for the vice president, buying a new presidential jet, and other controversial expenses.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu again acknowledged the pains Nigerians were going through as a result of his policies. He promised that the policies would eventually improve the economy.
