Urhobo World United Union empowers women in Lagos

The FrontierThe FrontierNovember 16, 2024 5241 Minutes read0

The Urhobo World United Union (UWUU), Lagos Zone, held a crucial lecture on female hygiene and domestic violence for women in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, Lagos State.

The event, themed, “Eko We Kobiruo,” meaning “Lagos, We Appreciate You,” aimed to empower women with essential life skills and express gratitude to the Lagos State government for its support, reports Saturday Independent.

UWUU Chairman, Lagos Zone, Sylvester Okiemute Obamrese, highlighted the importance of women in the community and the need for self-care.

“Women are the backbone of the family,” he stated. “This programme is designed to empower them with knowledge on hygiene and health care, enabling them to take care of themselves and their families.”

Keynote Speaker, Mrs Eniola Okey, addressed women’s hygiene and its significance. Another speaker, Mrs. Kemi Bello, Head of the Field Operations Department at the Lagos State Domestic And Sexual Violence Agency, emphasised the importance of reporting domestic violence.

“All women should stand up against domestic violence,” she declared. “Silence is not an option. This programme aims to break the culture of silence and provide women with the resources to seek help.”

Hon. Lucky Uduikhue, Vice Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government, expressed gratitude to UWUU for their initiative.

“It’s heartwarming to see an organisation from Delta State come to Lagos and invest in empowering our community,” he said.

“They are not just giving gifts but knowledge that will benefit families. This is the kind of partnership we need to build a stronger community.”

Stephen Onojomete, the project coordinator, urged women to prioritise their well-being and seek help when needed.

“Stay strong, maintain personal hygiene, and report any incidents of domestic violence to the authorities,” he advised.

“We want women to know that there is help available, and things will get better in Nigeria.”

The event, which saw a significant turnout of women, was praised for its timely and impactful message.

The UWUU’s commitment to empowering women in Ajeromi-Ifelodun through education and awareness initiatives is a testament to their dedication to community development and societal progress.
