Police bust Lagos killer gangs targeting Uber drivers

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command yesterday said they have arrested four suspects who specialise in robbing and killing Uber drivers in the state.

It was gathered that two of the suspects booked an Uber driver, one Seyi Fowler, to take them to Ajah area of the state, reports Sunday Independent.

The suspects, identified as Edmond Julius and Saturday Okey, and two others involved in the act, were arrested at their hideout.

The suspects allegedly stabbed the Uber driver, after which two of the suspects who escaped, were later arrested.

Parading the suspects yesterday at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Olarewaju Ishola, said the incident occurred on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

Ishola said an Uber driver was killed in such in a circumstance and that the matter was investigated, which linked Julius and Okey to the crime.

The stolen Toyota Camry was recovered and handed over to the driver’s family, who unfortunately died from the injuries sustained during the attack.

He said: “The suspects hired an Uber man who they stabbed to death in his vehicle.

“It’s the noise between the driver and the suspects that alerted our operatives and two of the suspects ran away from the state.”

The CP said during investigation, two other suspects who were on the run, were later arrested, while the victim’s vehicle was recovered and handed over to the family.

He said: “The suspects tied the Uber driver’s leg and hands, sealed his mouth and dumped his remains on the roadside, where it was later recovered.

“I would like to advise those who operate as Uber drivers and other commercial vehicles in Lagos to be wary of their passengers and if possible, should allow them to sit in front of the vehicle.

“They should also insist that their passengers are searched to avoid such unfortunate incident we are witnessing.

“We will summon the drivers to a meeting to give them some security tips so that they would not be falling victims again. This is the third time this type of thing is reported to the command.

“Two took place last year and this. Such are some of the cases of brutality we have witnessed in the state.

“There are also cultism cases which are on the increase in the state. We do not believe in jungle justice. They will be taken to court.

“Also, on September 17, 2024, another Uber driver was killed and buried at the outskirts of Lagos. The suspects involved in that crime were arrested.

“The suspects took detectives of the command to where the Uber driver was buried and the car dealer they sold the vehicle to.

Ishola added that the vehicle was recovered from the car dealer and the suspects charged to court.
