Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, has said that it is time to move beyond promises to practical solutions that will empower women and uplift the vulnerable.

Speaking today at the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration organised by her ministry, themed: “Accelerate Action,” Dada stated that stakeholders must act with urgency, determination, and commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women in society, reports The Guardian.
Noting that the theme is not just a call to reflection but a powerful reminder that the time for slow progress is over, the commissioner stated that women are the backbone of families, communities, and economies.
She said, “Across the world, women continue to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and contribute immensely to national development.
“Yet, despite these achievements, we still face persistent challenges—gender inequality, economic disparity, gender-based violence, and limited access to quality education, healthcare, and leadership opportunities.
“Today, I call on all stakeholders — government, civil society organisations, the private sector, and individuals — to work collaboratively in accelerating the actions needed to close the gender gap.
“We must move beyond promises to practical solutions that will empower women and uplift the vulnerable. As a ministry, we have been unwavering in our commitment to supporting women through empowerment programmes, training initiatives, and advocacy.
“We have created platforms that equip women with the skills and resources they need to be financially independent and self-sufficient.
“Our various skill acquisition programmes and business development initiatives continue to transform the lives of countless women, ensuring that they are active participants in economic growth.
“An educated woman is an empowered woman. We will continue to advocate for increased investment in vocational training, ensuring that no woman is left behind due to socioeconomic barriers.
“Through scholarships, mentorship programmes, and capacity-building workshops, we are strengthening women’s ability to thrive in all sectors.
“Beyond economic empowerment, we recognize the importance of women’s overall well-being, including their mental health.
“The challenges women face, whether at home, in the workplace, or in society, can take a significant toll on their mental and emotional well-being.
“As a ministry, we are actively working to provide safe spaces, counseling services, and mental health support programmes to ensure that women have the resources they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.”
Dada stated that violence against women and girls is a serious violation of human rights, and it is time to take a firm stand against all forms of sexual and domestic abuse.
He added, “Our ministry has been at the forefront of advocating for stricter laws, providing support for survivors, and ensuring access to justice.
“We have established intervention programmes, safe shelters, and legal aid services to assist victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
“However, we cannot do it alone. We need law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and every citizen to join hands in creating a society free of violence and discrimination.
“Women must not only have a seat at the table but must also be active participants in shaping policies and decisions that affect their lives.
“We need more women in governance, business leadership, and community development roles.
“Through leadership training, mentorship programmes, and policy advocacy, we are working to break down barriers that hinder women from taking their rightful place in decision-making positions.”
The commissioner commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his unwavering passion for women’s empowerment and gender inclusion.
He added, “Mr. Governor, this administration’s commitment to supporting women aligns perfectly with this year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action.’ Through numerous policies and initiatives, Mr. Governor has consistently championed programmes that promote economic independence, leadership opportunities, and social protection for women across Lagos State.”
The commissioner also applauded the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for her relentless efforts in uplifting vulnerable women in Lagos State.
She said, “Your dedication to maternal and child healthcare, economic empowerment, and social welfare programmes has brought hope and support to thousands of women facing hardship. Your commitment to protecting and advancing the rights of women is truly commendable.”
