PDP threatens to expel Wike over anti-party activities

•Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that it may suspend or expel the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over alleged anti-party activities.

The party, led by its Acting Chairman, Nname Robinson Ewor, accused Wike of actions that have brought the PDP into disrepute, adding that disciplinary measures would be taken at the appropriate time, reports The Guardian.

“The FCT Minister has taken several actions that have brought the party into disrepute, amounting to anti-party activity. The party will take action at the appropriate time,” Ewor stated during a press briefing in Port Harcourt yesterday.

“We have layers and organs of the Party. And you know the challenge Wike created for us in this state. Today, we have properly taken over the party. Action will be taken against Wike for anti-party activity, including suspending him where necessary or expelling him from the party if it is necessary. The party will do that under our watch in the state.”

The PDP chieftain also urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that Rivers State continues to receive its federal allocations, despite the Supreme Court judgment.

He warned that any move to withhold the funds would be tantamount to “shutting down governance” and denying civil servants and residents their livelihoods.

Ewor urged President Tinubu to emulate former U.S. President Donald Trump, who intervened to prevent the ban of TikTok despite a Supreme Court ruling in the United States.

He also called on federal appointees to stop what he described as the weaponisation of agencies, including the judiciary, against Rivers State.

“There is enough insecurity in the country; there is no point in creating one in our dear peaceful state, Rivers State,” he cautioned.

On the ongoing political crisis in the state, Ewor urged Martins Amaewhule and the 26 lawmakers aligned with Wike to embrace peace and cooperate with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“We urge the lawmakers to work towards the full implementation of the Supreme Court judgment, including playing a key role in the forthcoming Local Government election, accepting the representation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill (Budget) by the Governor, scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and dropping or withdrawing the impeachment notice against the Governor and his Deputy,” he stated.

Ewor further called on Wike to foster peace and a good working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government, similar to what he enjoyed during his tenure as Rivers State governor.

He also urged PDP supporters and the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful, stressing that “peace brings progress.”
