JUST IN: Traders cry helplessly as fire destroys goods in Anambra market

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 28, 2025 3061 Minutes read0

•Fire outbreak

An unfortunate fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha, Anambra State, has destroyed goods worth billions of naira today.

Traders were heartbroken as they watched their goods fizzle out in clouds of flame, reports Channels TV.

Anambra State firefighters have continued making efforts to contain the situation completely with four firefighting trucks on ground working at the scene.

Other sister agencies and the public who are on ground at the location have joined the firemen in putting out the fire.

According to the Anambra State Fire Service, a distress call was received at around 6:20 am, prompting the immediate deployment of firemen to the scene.

Some eyewitnesses also claim in some trending videos that residential buildings and warehouses around the Onitsha Main Market and its environs are also affected by the fire, with many goods and property destroyed.

The Fire Service, however, urged the public to remain calm, stressing that the situation will be handled to prevent further damage.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service said it is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak, making appeal to business owners and residents to take proactive fire safety measures to minimize the risk of such incidents.

The service advised the public to ensure that electrical installations are properly maintained, fire-prone materials are safely stored, and emergency numbers are kept handy.
