There’s price for betrayal – Former Governor Kwankwaso tells defected lawmakers, supporters

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 10, 2025 2982 Minutes read0

•Rabiu Kwankwaso

Former Governor of Kano State and National leader of New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said those that defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the opposition would soon pay the price of betrayal.

This was as he stated that the NNPP would remain resolutely firm in the face of oppression and hardship confronting the country, reports The Guardian.

The presidential candidate of NNPP in 2023 general election spoke at his Miller road mansion while receiving supporters of the Senator representing Kano South, Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, on solidarity visit.

Earlier, one of the leaders of the group Sunusi Hukuma, declared that their loyalty to Kwankwaso remains unshakeable despite the defection of their kinsman Senator Sumaila.

The leader of the group vowed to muscle energy against the political ambition of Senator Sumaila, just as he declared readiness to vote the next candidate preferred by Kwankwaso to replace Sumaila.

Hukuma, however, distanced his group from those that move along with Senator Sumaila to APC, adding that they withdrew their supports for the senator the moment he abandoned the platform that brought him to the National Assembly.

Hukuma, who led the crowd to renew their allegiance, subsequently replaced their caps with the red symbol of Kwankwasiyya to signal their loyalty.

“We shall continue to be loyal to the Kwankwasiyya Movement. We supported the senator because he joined the movement and contested. Now that he has left the movement, we have come before our beloved leader to reiterate our loyalty to the leadership of Kwankwasiyya, where we have been and will remain forever,” he stated.

Kwankwaso commended the group for their loyalty despite several attempt to corruption their minds.

Though Kwankwaso did not categorically mention Senator Sumaila’s name, he applauded the supporters of the lawmaker for resisting the temptation of dumping the Kwankwasiyya movement when he defected.

“Kwankwasiyya is a movement for the people and a movement for those who reason, it is not a money-making venture. Under this movement the poor have come to understand that they don’t need money or some gifts to vote for anybody again.

“It is such that those who were voted for by the poor who have refused to be bribed to vote for others. They have unfortunately dumped our party after they have been bribed.

“I assure you that this will not persist. As the time of judgement will soon come when they will realise they made the wrong decision. But for anyone who have betrayed the trust of the people that voted for him, there is a price for that,” he said.

Recalled that Senator Sumaila, prior to the 2023 general election, left APC and joined the NNPP where he won the Senatorial seat representing Kano South. Sumaila has now dumped the NNPP and returned to the APC, just as he declared full support for President Bola Tinubu’s victory in Kano.
