Name of new Super Eagles captain emerges after Troost-Ekong’s retirement

The FrontierThe FrontierDecember 5, 2025 2050 Minutes read0

The sudden retirement of Troost-Ekong from Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, has created the chance for Wilfred Ndidi to become the captain of the team.

Ekong announced his voluntary retirement from the national team, stating that he had spent his time in the national team with 83 caps, and five medals.

Ndidi, who captained the Super Eagles at the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco last month, will now officially take up the role at the AFCON.

Ndidi, who captained the Super Eagles at the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco last month, will now officially take up the role at the AFCON, reports Daily Independent.

The midfielder and winger, Moses Simon are currently the most senior members of the Super Eagles.

Simon is expected to be named vice-captain.

Ndidi, who made his debut for the Super Eagles in August 2015, has 71 caps with the team.

Injury ruled him out of last year’s delayed 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
