Some groups fuelling tensions in ADC over presidential ticket – Party chieftain Dele Momodu

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 7, 2026 1251 Minutes read0

A chieftain of the coalition-led African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned that certain groups within the party are introducing what he described as “aggression and rambunctiousness” into the party, amid growing contestation over its 2027 presidential ticket.

Momodu’s remarks come against the backdrop of increasing pressure from supporters and allies of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who are urging the ADC to concede its presidential ticket to him ahead of the next general election.

Some of Obi’s backers have insisted he should not accept a vice-presidential slot under any coalition arrangement, reports Daily Trust.

Recently, political economist Pat Utomi threatened to withdraw his support for Obi if he settles for a running mate position in 2027. Activist Aisha Yesufu and the Obidient Movement have also publicly aligned with the view that Obi must contest the presidency.

In a post on his X handle titled, “My Candid Advice to ADC: Avoid Another Wike Scenario,” Momodu cautioned the party’s leadership against allowing any individual or group to destabilise the coalition.

He stressed that when opposition leaders adopted the ADC as a platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), participation was voluntary and premised on internal democracy.

Momodu urged the ADC to enforce discipline early, warning that unchecked disputes could undermine the party before it fully consolidates.

“No group or individual should be allowed to cause chaos,” he said, arguing that attempts to secure the presidential ticket through “donation and coronation” rather than persuasion and elections would weaken the coalition.

He likened the situation to the crisis that engulfed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning the ADC to avoid becoming, in his words, “a Fuji House of Commotion.”
