Abuja Council poll: Imposing curfew day before election attempt to suppress voters – ADC

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 21, 2026 561 Minutes read0

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised the alarm over what it described as a premature declaration of curfew in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of today’s elections.

The party expressed concern over the government’s decision to impose movement restrictions from 8pm yesterday, saying the move could affect voter turnout, reports Weekend Trust.

In a post on X, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that restricting movement a day before the election was aimed at discouraging participation.

He stated that while limited restrictions on election day may be necessary for security reasons, the established practice is for such measures to take effect at midnight on the day of the poll.

“We are concerned by the decision of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to impose a curfew on the FCT from 8pm on Friday. The ADC will therefore like to register its strong objection to this premature restriction on movement.

“Elections must be conducted in an atmosphere that is not only safe but also visibly free and open to all eligible voters.

“Abuja residents must be able to travel safely to their polling units, remain there until voting process is concluded and return home without fear of harassment, obstruction or arbitrary restriction of movement,” the party said.
