Varsity threatens to seize stray animals, sanction owners

•Bayero University Kano main gate

Bayero University Kano has threatened to impound stray animals found roaming within its campuses and sanction their owners.

A statement today by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar, warned that “the rearing of animals within the university premises is strictly prohibited” under the Revised Guidelines for Staff Housing Allocation and Maintenance.

The university management said the move is part of efforts to enforce existing housing regulations and maintain environmental hygiene across staff quarters, reports The PUNCH.

It emphasised that residents who keep the permitted minimum number of domestic animals must ensure they are properly confined.

“Allowing animals to roam freely within the university community constitutes a violation of established regulations and poses environmental, health, and safety concerns,” the statement said.

The management disclosed that the Security Division “will immediately commence the arrest and impoundment of stray animals found roaming within the university campuses.”

It stressed that owners of such animals “will be identified and held accountable in line with existing regulations.”

The university management further warned that members found contravening the directive would face appropriate sanctions as provided in the Staff Quarters Residency Guidelines.

The university urged all residents of the Old and New Campuses, Zoo Road Staff Quarters, and the School of Continuing Education to comply fully with the directives, stressing that the measures are necessary to “maintain order, hygiene, and the integrity of the campus environment.”
