Climate change: Osun to commence planting of 100,000 trees in April

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 30, 2024 2131 Minutes read0

The Osun State Government has concluded plans to commence planting of over 100,000 trees to tackle challenges related to climate change.

Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, made this known while speaking with reporters in his office, saying that Governor Ademola Adeleke has approved the planting of over 100,000 tree seedlings in the forest reserve, reports The Nation.

He said: “The afforestation programme has dovetailed into the climate change agenda and this is why Governor Ademola Adeleke is taking the climate change agenda very seriously. He engaged a consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Professor Chinwe Obuaku to work out modalities for the government.

“We have had several programmes on climate. For our afforestation plan, we will commence planting of over 100,000 trees in April 2024.”

He added:“The governor has approved that we re-enact environmental sanitation once a month across the state which will start by the end of next month.

“We are going to fix every last Saturday of the month for the programme. The Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme(OYES), we have rebranded the name, we call them Environmental Sanitation Marshalls, and they will start work at the end of this month. They are saddled with the responsibility of cleaning the public environment.”
