Varsity confers posthumous degree on late former President Buhari

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 8, 2026 621 Minutes read0

Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has conferred a posthumous honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science on the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The award, approved by the Governing Council of the university, was presented during the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony held yesterday in Katsina, reports Sunday Trust.

The University authorities said the honour was bestowed in acknowledgment of the late president’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s political evolution, visionary leadership, and dedication to national unity and development.

They noted that Buhari’s legacy, particularly his immense contributions to the growth and strengthening of the tertiary education sector in the country, made him deserving of the posthumous recognition.

According to the institution, the decision to honour the former president was aimed at reflecting on his monumental strides in governance and nation-building, which the university said should serve as a guide and source of inspiration for present and future leaders of Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of other award recipients, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, urged graduating students to remain committed to patriotism, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.

Ambassador Rufa’i advised the graduates to deploy their education toward building an inclusive society where all citizens can live with dignity, peace, and equal opportunities.

The convocation ceremony also witnessed the award of degrees and diplomas to graduating students across various faculties, as well as the conferment of other honorary distinctions on individuals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to national development.
