2027 elections: Rights group writes INEC, seeks clarification on Tinubu’s certificate

Ahead of the 2027 general election, a civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking clarification on issues surrounding the academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election process.

In a letter addressed to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, the group requested that the electoral body clarify its position on allegations raised over the authenticity and legal status of certificates attributed to the President, saying the matter has implications for electoral credibility and public confidence, reports The Guardian.

The group, in the letter dated June 19, 2026 and signed by its Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, urged INEC to provide guidance on the legal implications of the allegations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

CFRPA referenced previous legal proceedings and documents relating to academic records from Chicago State University, as well as claims concerning other credentials submitted in election filings, and called for an independent clarification by the electoral body.

The organisation argued that resolving the matter would help strengthen transparency, rule of law and public trust in the electoral process.

It further stated that failure by INEC to clarify its position may compel it to seek legal redress, insisting that electoral institutions must address questions bordering on candidate eligibility before future elections.

INEC has not publicly responded to the request as of the time of filing this report.
