2027 Lagos governorship election: APC unveils Damilola Sonayon-James as Hamzat’s running mate

‎The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled Badagry Princess and Deputy State Woman Leader of the party, Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James, as the deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 general election.

‎Sonayon-James will run alongside the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who recently emerged as the party’s flags bearer for the election, reports The Nation.

Announcing the decision, in a statement signed by the Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, Sonayon-James emerged after an extensive consultation and selection process that assessed competence, leadership capacity, grassroots acceptance, loyalty to the party and ability to contribute to the continued development of Lagos State.

‎Ojelabi described the deputy governorship candidate as a committed party loyalist with a strong record of public service, innovative thinking and leadership across the public, private and political sectors.

‎He expressed confidence in the Hamzat/Sonayon-James ticket, saying the combination represents a blend of experience, innovation, grassroots connection and visionary leadership capable of advancing the developmental aspirations of Lagos residents.

‎The APC chairman urged Lagosians to support the party in the 2027 election, noting that a vote for the APC would amount to a vote for continuity, prosperity, inclusive growth and a greater Lagos.

‎According to the party, Sonayon-James, 41, is a governance and development professional with over 15 years of experience spanning public policy, institutional development, sustainability, risk governance, human capital strategy, stakeholder engagement and community development.

‎She is widely recognised for her grassroots engagement and commitment to community development.

She previously served as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, where she championed initiatives in agricultural development, women empowerment, youth inclusion, educational support and community welfare.

‎Beyond public office, Sonayon-James has remained active in grassroots political mobilisation, women leadership development, youth empowerment and community advocacy across Lagos State.

‎The party noted that her emergence reinforces the APC’s commitment to inclusive leadership, youth participation and women representation in governance, while strengthening its preparations for the 2027 governorship contest.
