•Tinubu and some governors
Northern youths under the aegis of The Arewa Youth Assembly, have accused some governors of allegedly working against the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that attempts to destabilise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could threaten the country’s democratic stability.
Addressing journalists at a press conference, the group alleged that certain political actors were plotting to create division within the Progressive Governors Forum as part of efforts to weaken the APC and undermine President Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The Assembly claimed that the alleged moves were similar to political developments that preceded the 2015 general elections, which it said contributed to internal crises within the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reports Daily Independent.
According to the group, the current Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, had become a target because of his support for President Tinubu and his commitment to party unity.
The group specifically accused Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of allegedly attempting to create divisions among governors within the ruling party, describing the move as a threat to the APC’s internal stability.
The Arewa Youth Assembly also expressed support for the continuation of the existing power rotation arrangement, insisting that the South should complete its tenure by 2031 before power returns to the North.
It further alleged that some disgruntled political actors within the APC were attempting to weaken the party from within due to personal grievances and political interests.
The group issued a 48-hour ultimatum to those allegedly involved in the plot to apologise to President Tinubu, the Progressive Governors Forum, and the APC leadership, warning that failure to do so could trigger nationwide mobilisation of youths against them.
The Assembly also called on the Ogun and Enugu State Houses of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the affected governors, alleging that their actions posed a threat to democracy.
Reaffirming its support for President Tinubu’s reelection bid, the group said it would continue to mobilise support for the President and defend the unity of the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
