Another fresh rivalry has gripped Borno State as factions of the Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) engaged in deadly clashes in Sambisa Forest of Borno and Yobe states
Security sources over the weekend in Maiduguri, confirmed that no fewer than 23 terrorists were killed in the renewed fighting between Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Chingolo axis of Bama Local Government Area, reports Saturday Guardian.
Boko Haram fighters reportedly attacked ISWAP members advancing into the area, triggering sustained exchange of gun fire that lasted for more than an hour in the forest.
The videos obtained and verified by a Security Analyst, Zagazola Makama indicated intense gun battles as both factions try to consolidate their positions and block each other’s expansion within Sambisa.
Intelligence reports also suggest that over 23 terrorists were killed on both sides, since the clashes began two days ago, even though exact casualty figures remain unverified.
Analysts, therefore stated that the rivalry underscores the ongoing confrontations between Boko Haram and ISWAP over territory, access routes, resources, and control of fighters in Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad region.
The infighting between ISWAP and Boko Haram terror grips, has further weakened them and disrupted their operations in the Northeast region long considered a stronghold for the terrorists.
