4 nabbed over ₦500 million work visa scam in Lagos

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 16, 2025 7621 Minutes read0

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four individuals linked to a massive visa scam amounting to ₦500 million, targeting over 100 unsuspecting Nigerians with false promises of overseas employment.

The suspects — Blessing Wefsutu (27), Chineye Christian (36), Archibong Udeme Ifereke (23), and Maurine Peter (25) — were all identified as staff of an education consultancy firm based in the Ago Okota area of Lagos.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following a transfer of the case from the Ago Okota Division, where the initial complaints were lodged.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects fraudulently obtained ₦500 million from more than 100 victims under the false pretext of securing Canadian and Australian work visas,” the statement read.

The scam, police say, was carried out systematically, with victims lured into believing they were participating in a legitimate immigration and job placement process.

The victims allegedly paid various sums of money in exchange for promised job placements abroad — opportunities which never materialised.

Further investigations are ongoing, and authorities have confirmed that more individuals involved in the syndicate are yet to be apprehended.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged members of the public to remain cautious and thoroughly verify any travel or recruitment agency before making financial commitments.

He assures the public that the Command remains committed to pursuing justice and protecting residents from fraudsters and other criminal elements.
