Four siblings were suspected to have died of food poisoning in Ogidi Community, Idemili North Local Council of Anambra State, on Wednesday, while their mother, who consumed the same meal, is reportedly in critical condition at a hospital.

It was learnt that the remains of the siblings have been deposited in a morgue as medical personnel work to save their mother, reports The Guardian.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the deceased would be autopsied, and further investigations are ongoing.

“The Anambra State Police Command has taken over the scene of a tragic incident involving the sudden death of four siblings at Ogidi, Idemili North Local Council, following a suspected case of food poisoning,” Ikenga said.

“Upon receiving the distress report, police operatives from Ogidi Division swiftly responded to the scene. The bodies of the deceased children were recovered and have since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.”

He added, “The mother of the victims, who also reportedly consumed the same meal, is currently receiving intensive medical care at a hospital and remains in critical condition.”

Ikenga disclosed that samples of the suspected food had been collected and sent for forensic analysis to determine the cause of the incident.

He said, “Officers are also conducting interviews with residents and potential witnesses within the neighbourhood to gather relevant information that may aid the ongoing investigation.”

Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, expressed shock and sadness over the incident. He sympathised with the affected family and wished the mother a speedy recovery, noting that her account would be crucial in understanding the circumstances surrounding the case.

The commissioner assured the public of a comprehensive investigation, stating, “No stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth behind this tragic occurrence.”
