7 World leaders killed through targetted, rebel operations •FULL LIST

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 2, 2026 1641 Minutes read0

The reported death of Ali Khamenei has now been officially confirmed by Iranian state media, marking one of the most consequential removals of a sitting head of state in the 21st century.

Iran’s supreme leader, aged 86, was declared dead on February 28, after a joint U.S.–Israeli military operation, ending his more than three-decade rule and triggering 40 days of national mourning across the Islamic Republic, reports The Nation.

His killing follows a historical pattern in which prominent global leaders were removed through external military intervention, targetted strikes, coups, or assassinations.

Across different regions and eras, several powerful leaders have met their end through targeted military strikes, rebel offensives, coups, or politically motivated assassinations, events that not only reshaped their nations but also altered regional stability and global power dynamics.

Here are seven World killed through targetted military operations, force

1. Muammar Gaddafi (Libya)

Gaddafi was killed on October 20, 2011, near Sirte during the closing stages of the Libyan Civil War after NATO aircraft struck his convoy. His death ended over four decades of rule and a prolonged conflict with Western powers.

2. Saddam Hussein (Iraq)

Captured by U.S. forces in December 2003, Saddam was later tried and executed for crimes against humanity on December 30, 2006. His ousting was the formal objective of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, justified at the time by alleged weapons of mass destruction.

3. Anwar Sadat (Egypt)

Assassinated on October 6, 1981, during a national parade in Cairo by military officers opposed to his peace deal with Israel — the Camp David Accords.

4. Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso)

Sankara was killed in a coup on October 15, 1987, orchestrated by his deputy, Blaise Compaoré, who then assumed power and reversed Sankara’s reforms.

5. Patrice Lumumba (DR Congo)

Lumumba, the country’s first elected prime minister, was executed in 1961 after being ousted in a coup — a move later shown to involve foreign intelligence agencies amid Cold War tensions.

6. Idriss Déby (Chad)

Déby died on April 20, 2021, from battlefield wounds sustained against rebels. His death came just days after winning a sixth term. His son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, was installed as head of a transitional military council.

7. Ali Khamenei (Iran)

Iranian state media confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, following joint US–Israeli strikes. A period of extended national mourning has been declared as leadership transition plans begin.
