Register before operating – Lagos Assembly tells market traders

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 28, 2024 4431 Minutes read0

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have ordered the Orilowo Market in Agboyi-Ketu to register under the Local Council Development Area, LCDA, before commencing operation.

This decision was made as a sequel to a peaceful protest and petition from the Orilowo perishable goods marketers to the House of Assembly over their inability to be recognised as Orilowo Food Market under Agboyi Ketu LCDA.

Speaking, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration, Mr Sanni Okanlawon, who read the report on the floor of the House, explained the stance between both parties that led to the recommendations.

Before the resolution of the House, the committee had recommended that Orilowo Perishable Foods Market not operate until the traders are registered for such purposes by Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

The committee also recommended that the yet-to-be registered market should approach Agboyi-Ketu LCDA with the necessary documentation for official registration, while the LCDA should register the market once all the requirements are met.

Presiding over the sitting, Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Meranda Mojisola, resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development as the resolution of the House.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has adopted the recommendation of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, asking the Chairman of Yaba LCDA to ensure peace among Community Development Areas, CDAs, and the entire community.

The lawmakers resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Committee as follows: the chairman of the Yaba LCDA should inaugurate the newly elected executives of the Karimu Williams CDA, having followed due process in the conduct of its election in line with state government directives.

The House also resolved that the Agriculture, Natural Resources, Rural, and Social Community Development Department of all local governments and local council development areas should be more active and proactive in their duties with respect to CDA administrations and that the CDA law CAP C10 Vol. 3 laws of Lagos State 2015 be looked into with a view to making the CDAs and their administrations more transparent.
