Governor Alia sacks state electoral commission chairman

•Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia

Benue State governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has directed the Chairman, Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), Dr John Chen, to vacate office and handover to the Administrative Secretary of the Commission.

In the statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Sir Kula Tersoo and made available to newsmen in Makurdi today, he observed that the actions of the Commission’s chairman fall short of public interest.

The CPS, noted that the directive for the chairman of the commission to handover was in response to the resolution of the Benue State House of Assembly (BNHA).

Kula said, “His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia is in receipt of a communication from the Benue State House of Assembly wherein the Honourable members sent some resolutions to him for further implementation.

“These resolutions include, amongst others; that the chairman of the Commission, Dr. John Chen should be removed from the office.

“The Assembly accused the BSIEC chairman of lacking good judgement as to which decision will appeal to the greater majority of all stakeholders, and also that his actions so far in office fall short of the public interest.”

Subsequently, Kula said, “Governor Alia has accepted the resolutions (of BNHA) and directed the Chairman of the commission to immediately hand over to the Administrative Secretary of the Commission.”
