Hunger protests: Varsity suspends lectures with immediate effect

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 5, 2024 2851 Minutes read0

The Management of Bayero University, Kano has ordered the immediate suspension of all scheduled lectures with immediate effect.

The directive was contained in a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Public Affairs, Lamara Garba on behalf of the Acting Registrar, today, reports The PUNCH.

“After a careful review of the situation in Kano State as a result of the National Protest, the University Management has directed that all scheduled lectures should be suspended forthwith,” the statement said.

The Management of the University also commended members of the university community for their support and cooperation in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere across its campuses.

However, as soon as normalcy returns, all academic and administrative activities will resume fully.

It advised students residing on the campuses to continue to remain calm and law-abiding, as adequate arrangements have been put in place to ensure their safety.

“The Management, in particular, is concerned with the safety of lives and property and, therefore, enjoins the members of the University community to continue to be cautious about their movements outside the campuses to avoid exposure to any possible danger,’ the statement added.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, had expressed dismay over the outcome of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, stating that they have undone years of progress in the state.

The Emir said he was disturbed by the destruction of the Nigerian Communications Commission digital centre, a multi-billion naira facility designed to equip Kano’s youth with digital skills and certify them in internet and computer proficiency.

Addressing newsmen at the Palace on Friday, the Emir said, “Today is a sad day for the people of Kano due to what has happened in the state. We sympathise with the entire indigent population of Kano.

On Saturday, operatives of the Kano State Police Command initiated a house-to-house search to recover items stolen during the #EndbadgovernanceinNigeria protest in Kano.
