Court bans public viewing, streaming of ‘Gangs of Lagos’ film

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 13, 2025 2600 Minutes read0

A Lagos High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) has prohibited the public viewing and streaming of the controversial film “Gangs of Lagos.”

Justice Idowu Alakija issued the order in a consent judgement, following an agreement reached between parties in the suit LD/6903GCM/2023, filed by the Isale Eko Descendants Union and two others against Amazon Web Services and 11 other respondents.

The court upheld the applicants’ argument that the movie misrepresented and disrespected the cultural heritage of the revered Eyo Masquerade and distorted the peaceful traditions of the Isale Eko people, reports Nigerian Tribune.

As part of the judgement, Justice Alakija mandated the defendants to issue an unreserved apology to the applicants.

“In consideration of the mutual promises contained herein and in full and final settlement of all the claims in this suit, the parties hereby agree that the 3rd to 11th respondents shall jointly issue a letter recognising the applicants’ position that the movie “Gangs of Lagos” erroneously portrayed and disparaged the cultural heritage of the well-respected Eyo Masquerade and the peace-loving nature and long-standing traditions of the Isale Eko people, and shall therein tender an unreserved apology to the applicants in this regard,” the judgement read.
