•Good road network in Nigeria

Good road networks are a nation’s foundation for economic and social development and citizens’ well-being. While Nigeria struggles to maintain its road infrastructure, some states stand out for their well-developed road systems.

This article used the Nigerian Query ranking 2024 to explore the top 10 Nigerian states with the best road networks. Here are the 10 states with good roads in Nigeria.

1. Abuja

Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, is renowned for having the best road networks in the country.

The road system in Abuja has been meticulously planned to minimise traffic congestion and facilitate smooth movement throughout the city. Notable roads such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe Motorway, Shehu Shagari Way, and the Airport Road provide well-maintained and visually appealing routes for residents and tourists.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)’s commitment to high-quality road construction reflects its dedication to providing efficient transportation and enhancing the city’s overall infrastructure. With well-designed and well-maintained roads, Abuja sets a benchmark for other states in Nigeria in terms of road infrastructure development and improvement.

2. Akwa Ibom State

Akwa Ibom State, located in the South-South geopolitical region of Nigeria, has the best roads in Nigeria and is renowned for its outstanding highways. The state has made significant strides in road infrastructure development, resulting in a well-maintained road network supporting efficient transportation and economic growth. With a low accident rate, Akwa Ibom’s commitment to road maintenance has attracted investment and boosted local businesses.

Examples of Akwa Ibom’s dedication to road infrastructure include the iconic Ibom Bridge, which connects important towns and symbolises the state’s progress. Additionally, the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road is highly regarded for its excellent surfacing, ensuring smooth and safe travel for motorists. These highways embody the state’s vision of creating compelling and interconnected transportation systems to enhance the lives of its residents and foster economic development.

3. Lagos State

Lagos, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, is renowned for its exceptional urban planning and substantial investments in road construction. The city’s robust revenue generation permits significant funding towards road infrastructure development.

Areas such as Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikeja epitomise Lagos’ impressive road networks. With continuous improvement efforts, Lagos has made significant strides in building and maintaining well-paved roads. Strategically positioned flyovers throughout the city alleviate traffic congestion, ensuring almost seamless transportation.

4. Ebonyi State

Ebonyi State, located in the southeast geopolitical region of Nigeria, has significantly improved its road network. Under the current administration, the state has invested in constructing and maintaining top-notch highways.

5. Ogun State

Ogun State, located in the southwest geopolitical region of Nigeria, has shown a strong commitment to developing road infrastructure. The state government has launched various road construction projects to enhance connectivity within and outside the state. Areas such as Oru-Awa Ilaporu Road (Ijebu North), Ọba Erinwole Road (Sagamu), Ikola-Navy-Osi Ota Road (Ota), Ait-Raypower Road (Ota), Kemta-Somorin Road (Abeokuta), Joju-Iyana Ota Road, Fajol-American Junction-Gbonagun road

Studies have shown a high density of well-maintained roads adhering to planning standards.

7. Oyo State

Located in southwest Nigeria, Oyo State boasts a road network built with quality in mind. A notable project is the ongoing construction of the 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin Road, which aims to improve connectivity between major towns and enhance agricultural production in the region.

Also, the Oyo State Government has embarked on numerous community road network projects to improve accessibility within rural areas like the iseyin– Fapote-Ogbomoso road renamed Adebayo Alao-Akala Memorial Highway in Oyo state..These initiatives contribute to a more comprehensive and interconnected road network across the state.

8. Enugu State

Enugu State, often called the “Coal City,” is known for its relatively well-maintained road network. The state government has prioritized road infrastructure as a critical aspect of its development strategy, leading to the construction and rehabilitation of several major roads.

Enugu State boasts several notable roads that contribute to its well-developed road network. Examples include the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, which connects Enugu State to other parts of the country and has one of the best-quality tarred roads in Nigeria. The Enugu-Onitsha Expressway is another well-paved, well-maintained road promoting intercity travel and facilitating connectivity between Enugu State and neighbouring states.
