Northern elders drum up support for constitution review

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 6, 2024 2861 Minutes read0

•Dr Bature AbdulAzi

National Patriotic Elders Forum (NPEF) has called on Nigerians to support the review of the nation’s constitution.

Making this assertion yesterday in Kano, the NPEF chairman, Ambassador Dr Bature AbdulAzi while reading a communiqué before the press in Kano, stressed the need for the committee to carry the elders along in their deliberation, reports Sunday Tribune.

He emphasised that the committee would do Nigeria good if issues of sensitivity like federalism, state police, local government autonomy and so many other similar issues are trashed with their full consent so that the nation will feel fully represented.

According to him, every part of Nigeria has one issue or the other that needs to be critically looked into, “hence the need for all stakeholders to rally round and give them necessary advice on to succeed.”

He therefore stated that Northern Nigeria today, among all the regions, is the most disturbed part which needs serious attention.

Ambassador AbdulAzi disclosed that the issue of poverty facing the Northern part of the country is the architect of most of problems bedeviling the region.

According to him, poverty and insecurity have taken root while education is facing decay with hundreds of children roaming about the streets as destitute.

He then stressed that this is one of the reasons the region requires special attention in the constitutional review.
