Judiciary workers end 3-month strike in Abia

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 30, 2025 3011 Minutes read0

Lawyers and inmates across Abia State breathed a sigh of relief today as the state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) officially announced the end of its three-month industrial action.

The strike, which had shut down courts and judiciary offices in all 17 local government areas, was called off following an agreement between JUSUN and the state government, reports The Nation.

The union had earlier insisted on confirming the payment of salary arrears before resuming work.

In a statement signed by State Chairman Comrade Prince Chinedu Ezeh and State Secretary Comrade Chibueze Nwachukwu, JUSUN said the decision was based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government on implementing the new minimum wage under the CONJUSS scale for judiciary workers.

“Abia State Branch, is pleased to announce the suspension of its industrial action, effective immediately.

“This decision follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JUSUN and the Abia State Government and the full payment of all arrears arising from the late implementation of the new minimum wage in line with the CONJUSS Scale for Judiciary workers, amongst many other issues.

“The union commends the Abia State Government led by His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his prompt intervention and commitment to prioritizing the welfare of judiciary workers.

“We also appreciate the support and understanding of the general public for the emancipation of the Judiciary.

“We extend our gratitude to the Honorable Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai, the entire Management of the Judiciary, the Honorable Judges of Abia State and all members of the Bench, the

“Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the learned silks, and all critical stakeholders for their unwavering support.

“Finally, we appreciate the patience and resilience of our members, who have remained committed to the cause of justice and the rule of law.

“The suspension of the industrial action marks a significant milestone in our struggle for the financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary.

“We remain committed to ensuring that the judiciary is robust, corruption-free, and dedicated to delivering justice to all.

“We also hope that the other issues agreed upon in the MoU will be implemented accordingly, as this will further strengthen the judiciary and enhance justice delivery in Abia State.”
