Sitting on bare floors, learning in tears worrisome – Education board boss laments

The FrontierThe FrontierJune 25, 2025 1712 Minutes read0

•Dr. Kassim Muh’d Kassim

The executive chairman, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, (NSUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muh’d Kassim, today disclosed that the sorry state of affairs in various primary schools across the state was discovered through his constant unscheduled visits.

Kassim in an interactive session with newsmen in his office said that having presented the true position of things to Governor Abdullahi Sule, he wasted no time in awarding contract of the supply of 15,716 chairs and desks across the various primary schools in the state, reports Daily Independent.

According to the NSUBEB boss “because of the general out cry through the prompt supervision of the Chairman and his board members, Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the supply of 15,716 chairs to be distributed to schools in Nasarawa State and directed the contractor to supply the chairs in the next one month for onward distribution to the schools” he said

NSUBEB boss who appreciated the Governor Abdullahi Sule for listening to the cry of the people; re-affirmed his commitment to work in line with the educational policies of the Governor to change the narrative in the basic education sub sector.

The NSUBEB boss further explained that basic education holds the key to the future as there are opportunities that come with formal education.

He said that his unscheduled visit across various primary schools in the state gave him a first hand information about the condition at the schools which cast a bleak shadow on the future of the pupils “I have been to classes to observe the furniture myself, I took pictures of the students sitting on bare floors, most of the schools, you see pupils either standing or sitting on the floor,” Kassim said with a wry smile on his face.

“In some classes, there are no chairs while some has but are broken and you see pupils sitting on the remnants of some the furniture, others sit on the floor while some stand by the wall, facing or turning away from the blackboard.

“The pupils are struggling to learn, but they have no option, I have personally seen the precarious learning situation that the pupils are facing and I’m determined to change the situation completely, I’m happy Governor Sule is ready to give me all the support , we will change the system and make public basic education attractive in Nasarawa State.

“I will not sit down in the office, I’m a field chairman, I’m ready to give my all to ensure that basic education in Nasarawa State under my watch works. Yes, it’s doable and it’s possible to change the narrative, with the reforms I’m bringing on board, primary education in Nasarawa will come back,” he said.
