Benue records 7 new suspected lassa fever cases

•Lassa fever

At least seven new suspected cases of Lassa fever have been recorded in Benue State as fear heightens over the possible spread of the viral disease across the state.

The State Epidemiologist, Dr. Asema Msuega, who made the disclosure to journalists in Makurdi, noted that samples had already been collected from the affected persons and sent for laboratory confirmation.

Msuega said health authorities were closely monitoring the situation and that surveillance had been intensified to ensure early detection and prompt response to any confirmed case.

He urged residents to adopt strict preventive measures, particularly proper food storage and protection from rodents, which are the primary carriers of the Lassa fever virus.

He added that basic hygiene practices, environmental cleanliness and effective rodent control remain critical in reducing the risk of infection.

Msuega further said that the Ministry of Health and Human Services has stepped up community sensitisation campaigns across the state.

The epidemiologist explained that the awareness drive focuses on environmental sanitation, regular clean-up exercises and public education, especially in areas identified as Lassa fever hotspots.

He also assured that healthcare facilities across the state are adequately equipped to manage suspected cases, noting that health workers have been trained and rapid response teams placed on standby.

Msuega appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid panic, stressing that the state government is fully prepared to contain the situation.

He advised members of the public to promptly report symptoms such as fever, weakness or unexplained bleeding to the nearest health facility, emphasising that early detection is key to effective treatment and control of the disease.
