JUST IN: Lagos doctors to begin strike on Monday

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 4, 2025 2291 Minutes read0

Resident doctors at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, have said that they will embark on a one-week warning strike over poor welfare.

The doctors, under the aegis of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), in a communiqué issued today and signed by its President, Babarinsa O. A., and Secretary, Disu K. B., stated that it was intolerable for the newly employed residents to continue working into their sixth month without being paid.

They said that they would proceed on an indefinite strike should the newly employed Residents not be paid by the end of July 2025, reports Channels TV.

The doctors frowned at what they described as the “now-established pattern of newly employed residents having to work for five to six months before receiving their first salaries”.

This, they said, was deemed unacceptable for the welfare of doctors and detrimental to clinical practice.

The communiqué read in part, “The congress observed with despair that the June salary window had closed without the new residents receiving their first salaries, after working for five months.

“The congress expressed disappointment that management has allowed this issue to persist for several years, despite repeated engagements by the association aimed at finding a lasting solution, especially as this situation is not observed in many other training institutions.

“The Congress resolved that the association shall embark on a one-week warning strike commencing 8 am on Monday, July 7, 2025, and will proceed on an indefinite strike should the newly employed residents not be paid by the end of July 2025.”
