Nigerian churches must assist the poor to avoid Nepal-like experience, says former Vice President Osinbajo’s campaign director

•Reverend Yomi Kasali

The General Overseer of the Foundation of Truth Assembly and the 2019 Director General of the former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, Reverend Yomi Kasali, has stated that Nigerian churches must be more proactive in helping the poor to prevent a situation similar to what recently occurred in Nepal.

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos about the state of the nation and the Church’s upcoming “Giant Killers Conference” in 2025, Kasali expressed concern that many churches in Nigeria have failed to support the less fortunate amidst ongoing economic challenges.

He emphasised that churches should be doing more to assist the government by reaching out to the poor as the country grapples with its hardships, reports Sunday Tribune.

“What happened in Nepal recently could happen in Nigeria. No country is immune to revolution. The belief that such events cannot occur here is misguided.

“After watching a TikTok video about the situation in Nepal, I called my son, who is in the U.S., and said, ‘Look, son, I’m scared. If this were to happen in Nigeria, people like us could be in danger.

“The impoverished might come to view all wealthy individuals as criminals or corrupt. Innocent people could be harmed or killed,” he warned.

Kasali lamented that while many churches are thriving in wealth, pleasure, and luxury, countless individuals are suffering from hunger.

“I believe churches should focus more on the lives of those they lead rather than merely constructing large buildings and acquiring luxury cars. We need to help our people much more than we currently do.

“Life is incredibly difficult for many, which is why I feel compelled to issue a call to churches: we need to step up our efforts. We need to put an end to the ‘Rolls-Royce competition’ we often see online, where churches boast about their extravagant buildings and vehicles. It’s madness,” he concluded.
