Anambra election: I belong to Labour Party but all contestants are my friends — Peter Obi

•Peter Obi

Former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, says that while he remains a committed member of the Labour Party and has campaigned for its governorship candidate, his overriding desire is for a free, fair, and credible election on November 8.

Speaking to reporters in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, Obi emphasised that all the governorship candidates are his friends and urged them to prioritise the interest of the state as they head into the poll, reports Vanguard.

“For this election, my party is Labour Party. I want a free and fair election. All the contestants are my friends. As a member of Labour Party, I am supporting our candidate, but not to the extent of vote buying because I can never buy votes,” Obi stated.

“I cannot go to the extent of doing anything untoward for the election. I want the election to be totally free and fair. I’m not on the ballot, and I believe that all those contesting are related to me one way or the other. Let Anambra people decide who will be their governor. People should not indulge in vote buying. I’m not against any of them.”

Obi, who noted that he left office as governor 12 years ago at the age of 42, said he has no personal stake in the election and insists the people of the state must freely choose their next leader.

Meanwhile, the former governor donated a total of N30 million to two health institutions in Anambra State today.

The beneficiaries — School of Nursing, Adazi Nnukwu, and the University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Ogidi —received N15 million each.

Obi said he has lined up similar interventions across the country over the next month and reminded students that the future belongs to them, urging them to take their studies seriously.
