Following the ongoing strike by primary school teachers over the non-payment of 25-month minimum wage arrears and other entitlements, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has invited the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for a meeting.

A source who is a member of the State Wing Executive Committee (SWEC) of the union who preferred anonymity confirmed the meeting to our reporter through telephone today, reports Daily Trust.

He disclosed that the minister, through his chief of staff, invited the union leadership to deliberate on how to resolve the lingering primary teachers strike so that pupils can go back to their classes.

He confided in our reporter that the meeting will also have the six area council chairmen, director of Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Dr Hassan Sule, permanent secretary, mandate secretary for education as well as other stakeholders in education sector in attendance.

“Yes, it is true, the FCT union teachers were invited by the FCT minister Nyesom Wike through his chief of staff for a meeting in order to see how the ongoing primary school teachers strike can be resolved today, ” he said.

It was earlier reported how primary school teachers embarked on strike after the 14-day ultimatum issued to the six area council chairmen to pay their members the balance of the remaining 60 percent minimum wage arrears and other entitlements.
