Insecurity: Chad seeks stronger ties with Nigeria over cross-border crimes

The FrontierThe FrontierNovember 12, 2025 1152 Minutes read0

Consul General of the Chadian Government, Bisso Youssouf, has called for a deeper security and economic synergy to tackle cross-border crimes between the Nigerian Government and his own government, especially around the Lake Chad Basin region.

This is according to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI in a post on the Nigerian Army’s verified X account (formerly Twitter) today, Wednesday November 12, 2025.

In the press release, he stated that Consul General Youssouf made the call while he led a delegation of Chadian Consulate officials to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the North East in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Lieutenant Colonel Uba wrote, “The Consul General of the Republic of Chad in Maiduguri, Mr Bisso Youssouf Mbodou Mbami, has called for deeper security and economic collaboration between Nigeria and Chad to combat cross-border crime and insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin.

“Youssouf made the call when he led a delegation from the Chadian Consulate on a courtesy visit to the Headquarters Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri.

“Enhanced synergy between both nations’ armed forces remained vital to defeating Boko Haram and other criminal networks undermining regional peace and stability.

“The Consul General commended the Nigerian military for its resilience and sacrifice in the ongoing counterterrorism operations, noting that the collaboration between the Nigerian and Chadian forces has been a model of regional partnership.

“Addressing trade and border issues, Youssouf appealed for continued dialogue to resolve communication gaps.

“He assured that the Chadian government was sensitising its citizens on Nigeria’s trade laws and contraband policies, stressing that “mutual understanding and cooperation are key to sustaining border commerce and trust.”

In his response, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described Chad as “a trusted brother and strategic ally” with whom Nigeria shares enduring security and cultural bonds.

He reaffirmed OPHK’s commitment to close collaboration under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which continues to safeguard shared borders and waterways for the benefit of both nations.

General Abubakar emphasised the importance of information sharing and coordination in securing the region, assuring the Consul General that his concerns would be addressed.

He said, “It is our duty to protect legitimate trade and ensure that goods and livelihoods do not fall into the hands of terrorists.”

The visit also provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on regional stability, cross-border trade, and the protection of Chadian citizens in Nigeria.

Youssouf was accompanied by the Consulate’s Liaison Officer, Major Oumar Tahir Attahir. The event featured the presentation of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph to mark the occasion.
