South South youths kick against moves by Rivers Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara

The South South Youths Initiative (SSYI) has strongly condemned the renewed impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as ill-conceived and destabilising.

SSYI, said youths across the South-South region, particularly in Rivers State, were deeply disturbed by the impeachment notice issued by the State House of Assembly, reports Daily Independent.

The position of the group was contained in a statement signed its National President, Comrade Imeabe Saviour Oscar today.

Saviour said the action by the lawmakers was coming at a time when Rivers people expected cooperation between the executive and the legislature to restore effective governance after what it described as a six-month near collapse during the period of emergency rule.

He said, “Rivers youths are appalled that this is coming at a point when we are all expecting that the legislature would work closely with the governor to give Rivers State the desired governance that has been lacking since the return from Emergency Rule.

“While other states are talking about governance, Rivers State is still playing politics despite coming out from a six-month near collapse of governance. This is most unfortunate. Even though we are aware that the country is about to enter a political season, this action by the Assembly is too sudden and ill-conceived.”

SSYI argued that although Nigeria is approaching a political season, the Assembly’s action was sudden, unnecessary and poorly thought out.

They also took aim at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urging him to stop actions capable of overheating the political climate in the state.

SSYI called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by calling the former governor to order, stressing that Rivers State does not belong to any single individual.

“We also want to call on the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to understand that he is not contesting for governorship or any political position, and we equally want Rivers people to join us in asking Nyesom Wike the election he is contesting for in 2027 that should warrant heating of the polity. Nyesom Wike should allow Governor Siminialayi Fubara to concentrate and govern the state.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to immediately call Mr Nyesom Wike to order.”

The youth group rejected any political agreement that does not protect the collective interest of Rivers youths, insisting that Governor Fubara must be allowed to complete his tenure without undue interference.

They said, “Nyesom Wike did not sign any agreement before he became governor of Rivers State, so whatever kangaroo agreement that was signed, Rivers youths are not in support of such and that the governor must be allowed to complete his first and second tenures like every other democratically elected governors that has governed Rivers State did.

“We also call on security agencies to hold Martin Amaewhule and the Rivers State House of Assembly responsible for any breach of the peace in Rivers State following their recent action.

The group called on the lawmakers to work with the governor to deliver good governance rather than distract the administration, and advised Governor Fubara to remain focused despite what it described as political distractions.

SSYI further urged security agencies to hold the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and the State House of Assembly responsible for any breakdown of law and order arising from the impeachment process.
