Democracy Day tragedy: Two killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway motor accident

•Road Safety officials at scene of an accident

Two pedestrians lost their lives on June 12 during the Democracy Day celebration after being struck by a speeding truck near Car Park C along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway corridor in Ogun State.

The spokesperson of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi said the victims were hit by a white Mini Howo truck with registration number AKR 201 XD while attempting to cross the expressway, reports Saturday Guardian.

According to him, one of the victims, a female, died at the scene, while the second victim died while being evacuated to the hospital.

He noted that operatives of TRACE, the Amotekun Corps, Redeemed Police MTD, and OGSEMSAS responded promptly to the rescue operation.

Akinbiyi explained that the crash occurred after the victims, while attempting to cross the road, were unaware of the speeding truck approaching the corridor.

The TRACE spokesperson added that the victims were taken to Redeemed Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead. Their remains were later deposited at the hospital morgue.

He further stated that the vehicle involved in the crash was recovered and towed by the Redeemed Police MTD for further investigation.

Akinbiyi said normalcy was restored after the evacuation of the victims and clearing of the scene, noting that the crash temporarily disrupted traffic flow along the corridor.
