EFCC probe: Union seeks compliance with own constitution

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 2, 2026 901 Minutes read0

Concerned members of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees in Lagos have called on the union’s national leadership to take action following a probe by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a letter of February 19 to the president general in Abuja, the group urged the national body to comply with Rule 27(ii) of its constitution, which provides for suspension of an officer under probe for financial infraction.

The letter noted that the EFCC probe had been going on since December, saying the matter had been brought to the attention of the national body, reports The Nation.

Citing Rule 27(ii), the signatories argued that suspension during probe is mandatory.

They quoted the rule: any officer under probe “shall be suspended during interrogation,” pending outcome of probe, while the National Executive Council may take further disciplinary measures upon a verdict of guilt.

The group expressed concern that the provision had not yet been invoked, despite the reported investigation.

They said the stay in office of any official under probe could affect discipline and public confidence.

They noted that adherence to the union’s constitution is essential to maintaining internal accountability and rule of law in the organisation.

The members urged the national leadership to act in accordance with the union’s rules pending conclusion of investigations by relevant law enforcement authorities.

They gave the national body seven days from receipt of the letter to respond, saying they would consider further lawful steps if their concerns were not addressed.
