Driver, passenger hospitalised as vehicles collide in Lagos

•Scene of the accident

A minibus driver, alongside his passenger, was hospitalised after sustaining severe injuries in an accident that occurred along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway yesterday.

It was learnt from a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, that the accident occurred when the driver of a Ford Jeep rammed into the minibus in the vicinity of the Ikota School along the expressway, reports The PUNCH.

Following the incident, the driver of the minibus reportedly slipped into a coma while a passenger aboard the bus suffered severe injuries.

He stated, “The accident involved a white Ford Jeep with number plate KWL 574 CY, and a fully occupied commercial mini-bus with plate number FST 207 YK.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the Ford Jeep, while allegedly travelling at a dangerously high speed, lost control of the vehicle and violently rammed into the moving commercial minibus.

“The resulting impact left the minibus extensively damaged. Regrettably, the bus driver slipped into a coma after suffering a severe fracture to his right arm, while a passenger aboard the vehicle sustained intense nasal haemorrhaging and was rendered unconscious at the scene.”

Taofiq noted that LASTMA officers at the scene of the accident swiftly rescued the injured victims to a nearby hospital and secured the scene with the support of the police.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, was quoted as cautioning drivers against reckless driving.

“Excessive speed remains a foremost contributor to fatal road incidents. Motorists are strongly advised to exercise prudence and prioritise life over haste,” the statement revealed he emphasised.

Bakare-Oki concluded by extending his “wishes for the swift recovery of the injured victims and reaffirmed the Agency’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding lives through proactive traffic management and public safety advocacy.”

It was earlier reported that two separate accidents that happened along the Oru/Ijebu-Igbo Road and Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway in Ogun State left four people dead.

Our correspondent gathered from separate traffic updates from the Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that the first accident along the Oru/Ijebu-Igbo Road occurred at about 7 a.m at the Odorasanyin area near the VIO office in Ijebu-Igbo.

According to the TRACE spokesperson, a Dangote truck had driven in the wrong direction and collided with another truck loaded with cow skin.

He added that another accident involved a motorcycle that crashed and somersaulted due to excessive speed, leaving one person dead.
