BREAKING: Gunshots, stampede at Rivers assembly as lawmakers begin governor’s impeachment

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 30, 2023 1,0261 Minutes read0

There were gunshots and firing of teargas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex today as some lawmakers sat to begin an impeachment process on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

About 23 lawmakers, including the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the sitting, resolved to begin the process.

The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.

The Frontier reports that there was an explosion at the assembly complex last night as the chamber was razed.

Lawmakers immediately after the sitting, were seen driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.

A viral video on social media sighted by The Frontier following the gunshots and firing of teargas, shows people running helter-skelter as policemen chased people, including workers whose offices are located within the area.

Some narratives have it that the attack on the governor captured in the video happened as he was driving on his convoy to the House of Assembly this morning.

A voice in the background of the video was shouting intermittently, “They are attacking the governor of Rivers State. Rivers State governor under attack. Nothing must happen to our governor.”
