•WAEC National Office, Yaba, Lagos
Trouble looms at the national office of the West African Examination Council located in Yaba area of Lagos as the workers are protesting against alleged nepotism by the Head of the Nigeria National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut.
According to our source who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation, the workers under the aegis of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) are poised for a showdown with the management this morning which, we learnt, has already taken the workers’ union to court.
The Frontier gathered that trouble started when the leadership of the workers union at the council frowned at alleged nepotism whereby the national head Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, who hails from Sokoto State, allegedly employs only people from his state to work at the council.
“The man has flooded the place (WAEC) with people from Sokoto State. Hardly any applicants from other parts of the country can be employed since he took over the position in 2023,” said our source.
“All we as a union are saying is that management should first look inside and fill any vacant positions with qualified existing staff before going outside to recruit people who are often from one particular area of the country,” our source added.
The Frontier was reliably informed that for resisting the alleged nepotism, management has sued the union.
The leadership of the union, it was gathered, said they are ready to go to any extent the management may push the matter as long as the alleged nepotism is stopped.
The situation is heating up and management is said to have already requested the services of the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) to takeover the entrance gates of the council, beginning this morning.
It was also learnt that management has issued an instruction that workers without identification tags should not be allowed into the office premises as from this morning.
For this reason, some workers are said to have slept over in the office last night.
“Most of them (workers) have told their families and friends that if they don’t come back home today they should know that they are at the police station,” added our source.
All efforts made to contact management were not successful as the official telephone lines to the establishment were not available as at time of filing this report.
