UNILAG insists exams continue amid strike directive by lecturers

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reaffirmed that semester examinations will continue despite a directive by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNILAG chapter, asking its members to withdraw their services over alleged unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances.

The development follows the union’s congress held yesterday, Tuesday, March 10, where lecturers resolved to suspend academic activities in protest against what it described as unpaid allowances, a move that had raised fears of disruption to the ongoing examinations at the institution.

In a statement issued by the university’s Communication Unit and signed by its head, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, in the late hours of yesterday, management said it had taken note of the union’s directive but maintained that due process was not followed before the strike action was announced.

According to the statement, the university has continued to engage with the ASUU executive in an effort to resolve the issues raised while ensuring that the welfare of both staff and students is considered.
